The gap between planning and execution is where MES lives. A production plan is an intention; work orders, material consumption, actual output and downtime are what happened. Without that feedback the next plan is built on assumptions.

Warehouse management is the most operationally dense system in most supply chains. Receiving and putaway determine whether inventory is findable; slotting and replenishment determine whether picking is efficient; cycle counting determines whether the number in the ERP means anything.

Operational data integration comes first: getting ERP, WMS, TMS, OMS and MES to agree on inventory, orders and status. Then KPIs and dashboards that operations recognize, and analytics across forecast, supplier, warehouse, transportation, inventory, order and manufacturing performance.

Exception analytics deserves specific mention — the pattern in what goes wrong is usually more actionable than the average of what goes right.
